Did you know there was a time in San Francisco’s history when Black people were not permitted to testify against white people in court? Or that Black people couldn’t ride on public transportation? 

Well, during the Gold Rush Era there was a woman who took these issues to court—and won! Her name was Mary Ellen Pleasant. Why haven’t you heard about her before? You may be more familiar with the rumors about her than you are with her actual deeds.
