Summer Diary: My Thoughts on Shade by Joli Hamada

Summer Diary: My Thoughts on Shade is a 14-pg mini comic I made in August of 2023, for a monthly comics collective called Patchwork Zine. This sentimental autobio comics reflects on how I feel about the season of summer as someone who was born and raised in Hawai’i, a mostly summer and warm place, and how I moved to Oregon, where it’s often very gloomy and overcast. I share about my new experiences with seasonal depression, my love for summer, and how the concept of shade has become a tender, bittersweet reminder of what it’s like to not have the sun around me in winter.
